M.O.R. Vacations compared to Global Resorts Network

by Troy Broussard

MOR Vacations, the newest travel club to hit the market has quickly surpassed even the long time king of the mountain, Global Resorts Network. Though MOR Vacations is a mere two weeks old in the market place, it’s parent membership company is a 23 year old industry veteran with more than 100,000 active members.

For the past two years Global Resorts Network has dominated the Travel Club industry. Simply put there has not been any real competition to Global Resorts. Sure there was YTB and also Coastal Vacations, but both companies had severe limitations when compared to GRN. No one wanted to deal with the hassles of becoming a travel agent or having to hassle with travel coupons and vouchers.

But the window of opportunity that Global Resorts has enjoyed is rapidly closing and MOR Vacations (the M.O.R. is for Members Only Resorts) is on track to surpass Global Resorts as the most sought after Travel Club. How has MOR Vacations been so successful so quickly?

It’s all about the economy. You see, Jon King, President and Founder of MOR Vacations recognized that while Global Resorts was a tremendous product with a tremendous pay plan, it had chosen for a long time to leave the door open to competition by ignoring some key markets. The biggest of which was the average buyer who wanted an easier price entry point than the $3000 the top package of Global Resorts offered.

In today’s tough economic times, a $3000 luxury travel club purchase is not as easy of a sell as it used to be. Several of the top affiliates in Global Resorts had been pleading the company for in-house financing for several months. GRN’s refusal to offer financing drove many sales away from it’s sales force and drove many customers to experiment with more affordable alternatives such as YTB or Coastal Vacations.

After dominating the marketplace for the past two years, Global Resorts has largely remaining unchanged from it’s inception. This may have been their achilles heal because MOR Vacations came out and immediately positioned itself as a “bigger, better, more flexible” alternative to GRN by introducing a simple financing program to it’s members and even a “trade-in” program that allows members of other competing travel clubs to surrender their existing membership and pay only $498 for their new MOR Vacations membership. This ingenious offer along with the promise of financing help to create a mass exodus of GRN top earners to MOR Vacations.

But financing and trade-in programs were only the beginning of the changes that MOR Vacations introduced. They priced their “Hot Weeks” at half of those of Global Resorts – starting at just $149. But, even more importantly, they focused their inventory such that the majority of those Hot Weeks would be available in the U.S. so that it’s members would not have to purchase last minute international airfare just to take advantage of a discount travel week. They also introduced high end diamond level resorts into their inventory – something that Global Resorts does not offer.

Different yes, but both are more similar than different – similar number of resorts, similar no fee structure, both offer lifetime memberships and guest weeks (though guest weeks at MOR Vacations are unlimited as opposed to only three weeks with GRN).

The largest differences are in the availability of financing offered by MOR Vacations and the fact that MOR Vacations has “stretched” the envelop in both directions on the resort pricing. Weeks in MOR Vacations, as previously noted, start at less than half those of GRN, but they also appeal to the more affluent members looking to vacation at high end diamond level resorts not available at any price in Global Resorts Network. Many other differences exist as well and they all favor MOR Vacations. For example, the starter package from MOR Vacations (called the “Emerald” package) is $200 cheaper than the “Gold” package from GRN and it is a five year package as opposed to only a three year package from GRN.

So, which one is right for you? The fact is that you can’t go wrong with either company, but when you compare the features and benefits of each side by side and in every area of difference MOR Vacations edges out Global Resorts, why would you simply not choose the more flexible and affordable offering by MOR Vacations?
